Aesthetic motivations
Many people feel that their nose is too big or out of proportion to the rest of their face. Nose reduction can help achieve balance and harmony in the face.
People with irregularities, such as a crooked nose or a disproportionate nasal tip, often opt for nose reduction or reshaping to improve their appearance.
Some people have bumps on their nose that may look unattractive, which may prompt the decision to have surgery.
Functional motivations
People with deviated septum or other structural problems of the nose often have difficulty breathing. Reducing or correcting the nose can improve the patency of the nasal passages.
Many people with problems like chronic sinusitis can experience relief from their symptoms after surgery.
Psychological motivations
Changing the appearance of your nose can have a positive impact on self-esteem and confidence, which can improve your quality of life.
Many people find that nose reduction will help achieve their desired appearance and contribute to their overall happiness and satisfaction.
Closed rhinoplasty
In this technique, all incisions are made inside the nasal cavity, which means that no external scars remain.
It is ideal for patients who want to change the shape of their nose or reduce its size, but have less complex anatomical problems.
Open rhinoplasty
This technique involves an incision in the columella (the part between the nostrils), which allows the surgeon better access to the nasal structures.
Indications: Recommended for more complex surgeries, such as significant shape changes, correction of septal deviations, or when precise shaping of the nasal tip is required.
Correction of the nasal tip
Techniques for correcting the tip of the nose include various methods of cartilage and skin reshaping.
They are used when patients want to change the shape, size or angle of the nasal tip. It allows for precise shaping and achieving the desired appearance of the nasal tip.
Preparation for surgery
The first step is a consultation with a plastic surgeon. During this meeting, the surgeon will discuss the desired changes with the patient, conduct a physical examination of the nose and face, and explain what can be achieved with surgery.
The patient will be asked about their medical history, allergies, medications they are taking, and any previous nose surgeries.
Avoidance of smoking and alcohol consumption will be recommended, and the patient should stop taking certain medications that may increase the risk of bleeding (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen) several weeks before surgery.
Day of surgery
Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia, but in some cases it can also be performed under local anesthesia with sedation. The anesthesiologist will evaluate the best option for the patient.
The patient is placed in the operating room, and the doctors will ensure a comfortable position.
Surgical procedure
Depending on the technique chosen (open or closed), the surgeon will make incisions inside the nasal cavity or on the columella.
The surgeon will remove or reshape cartilage and bone according to the patient's needs. This may include reducing the size of the nose, correcting septal deviations, or changing the shape of the nasal tip.
Closing the incisions
Once all necessary procedures are completed, the surgeon will carefully close the incisions using stitches or special tape. In some cases, a nasal splint may be used to support the new nasal structure during recovery.
Postoperative period
The patient wakes up in the postoperative ward, where they will be monitored by medical staff. It is common to experience some mild pain, swelling, and discomfort after surgery, but the doctor will prescribe painkillers to manage these symptoms. Patients can usually go home the same day or after one night, depending on the extent of the surgery and the individual's recovery.
The first days after surgery
Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are common and may peak in the first few days. The swelling usually begins to subside after 3 to 5 days.
Patients may experience mild to moderate pain, discomfort, or pressure in the nasal area. The doctor will prescribe analgesics to manage these symptoms.
The nose will be supported with splints or a bandage, which is usually removed after a few days. The surgeon will give instructions on when and how to remove the bandages.
Care tips
Rest is recommended for the first few days after surgery. Avoid strenuous activities, such as lifting heavy objects or intense exercise.
Cold compresses: Using cold compresses can help reduce swelling and bruising. Apply them to the area around your nose and eyes several times a day, but avoid putting ice directly on your skin.
Sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling. Using extra pillows or bolsters for support may be helpful.
Check-ups
Regular check-ups with your surgeon are important to monitor your recovery. During these check-ups, your doctor will check how your nose is healing and can give you instructions on how to care for it.
If stitches were used, the surgeon will remove them during one of your follow-up visits, usually within a week or two after surgery.
Long-term recovery
Although most swelling and bruising will subside within a few weeks, the final results of rhinoplasty may not be visible until several months later. The nose will continue to shape and adjust, and full healing may take up to a year.
Protect your nose from sunlight by using sunscreen or a hat, especially in the first few months after surgery to prevent skin discoloration or scarring.
Infections
Although infections are rare, they can occur after surgery. Symptoms include redness, swelling, pus discharge, and fever.
If an infection occurs, it is usually treated with antibiotics, and in more severe cases additional surgical intervention may be required.
Bleeding
Bleeding inside the nose is possible after surgery, which can cause swelling and pain. In rare cases, this may require additional surgery to control the bleeding.
Swelling and bruising
Although swelling is normal after surgery, some patients may take longer to fully recover and the swelling may last for several months.
In some cases, patients may notice irregularities in the shape or size of the nose that may require additional corrections.
Changes in feeling
Some patients may experience a decrease or loss of sensation in their nose or face after surgery. In most cases, sensation returns over time, but in rare cases it may be permanently damaged.
