Teeth whitening is one of the most commonly performed treatments in dental offices.
Why do teeth turn yellow, i.e. change color?
There are numerous causes of tooth discoloration. They can be divided into external and internal. External causes of tooth discoloration are most often lifestyle habits such as smoking and drinking coffee and dark beverages.
The internal causes of tooth discoloration are more complex, and may be the result of the deposition of pigments in the tooth structure itself, such as staining from certain antibiotics, genetics, aging or due to the death of the nerve inside the tooth (loss of vitality) and improper treatment.
External stains are easier to treat than internal stains, for which the bleaching process takes longer and varies depending on the cause.
Also, teeth with yellow and brown shades are easier to whiten than teeth with grayish and bluish tones.
At Bagatin Polyclinic, we offer several teeth whitening methods, and by consulting with our dentists, they will choose the best option for you.
Almost anyone can benefit from teeth whitening.
It is ideal for people who have healthy teeth and would like to have a more beautiful smile.
Teeth whitening should not be used on children under 16 years of age and pregnant or breastfeeding women.
In all other age groups it is permitted and often even desirable.
Before treatment, it is necessary to tell our doctors if you have extremely sensitive teeth, so that they can adjust the treatment and assess whether you are a suitable person for the treatment itself.
Our dentists will examine your teeth and supporting tissues, and a day or several days before the treatment, a thorough tartar cleaning and sandblasting of your teeth is required.
As we mentioned earlier, at the Bagatin Polyclinic we offer several teeth whitening methods.
After the dentist has assessed the best method for you and performed the preparation, which is the same for everyone, the next step is the treatment itself, and the procedures are different in small steps.
To make it easier for you, we will describe each teeth whitening method individually:
Laser teeth whitening
In our Polyclinic, we use the most modern technology of the diode laser EPIC™ 10, which represents the latest laser innovation, and is the result of 25 years of engineering by the American company Biolase .
Epic is the only diode laser that has three unique modes of operation (therapy): soft tissue surgery, whitening and pain reduction, which ensures a versatile approach to dental treatment, and thus a more pleasant treatment for the client, that is, the patient.
At the very beginning, our dentists will protect the mucous membrane and gums, after which they will apply a hydrogen peroxide-based gel to the teeth.
The laser light beam potentiates the release of oxygen from the gel, which breaks down pigment molecules in the tooth, leaving the tooth structure unchanged.
The treatment itself is very short. After the paste is applied, it must be left on the teeth for 5 minutes and then each quadrant of the mouth is passed through the laser twice. The gel is removed and the procedure is repeated once more in the same way.
The effects of teeth whitening can last up to three years, but it should be noted that this varies from person to person and largely depends on lifestyle habits.
Zoom whitening
The active ingredient in Zoom whitening gel is hydrogen peroxide, which has natural whitening properties and is intensified by light.
The Zoom lamp activates hydrogen peroxide with its specific light and helps it fill the surface of the tooth, after which pure oxygen enters the enamel and dentin and whitens the stained area, leaving the tooth structure unchanged.
The procedure of teeth whitening with the Zoom lamp is repeated three to four times in a treatment lasting 15 minutes.
Opalescence Boost whitening
The Opalescence Boost method uses a gel with 40% hydrogen peroxide. The gel also contains potassium nitrate and fluoride, which reduce tooth sensitivity and strengthen tooth enamel, and the neutral pH ensures maximum safety and effectiveness.
The procedure is repeated twice for 20 minutes.
The results of whitening, regardless of the method used, are individual, and teeth can be whitened by approximately several shades.
In some cases, teeth become temporarily sensitive to cold during and after treatment.
Sometimes there is discomfort in the gums, sore throat or white lines on the gums.
After treatment, white spots may appear on the gums, but they disappear after 30 minutes.
You may also experience a tingling sensation immediately after the treatment.
These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days after the treatment is completed. After the treatment, ACP gel can be applied to the teeth, which will eliminate any discomfort in the short term.
The results can last up to three years if you follow your dentist’s instructions.
The effect will most likely last shorter if you smoke or frequently eat and drink products that darken teeth (e.g. coffee, red wine, Coca-Cola, dark juices), so you should avoid them for at least two days after treatment.
It is recommended to come for a check-up 2 weeks after whitening, and a new treatment can only be repeated in consultation with the dentist and no more often than once a year.
Regular visits for scaling, polishing, and sandblasting will prolong the results of your whitened teeth.
In cooperation with banks, Bagatin Polyclinic provides the option of paying in installments, as well as interest-free payments up to a certain number of installments.
