Sagging lower face

As we age, the contours of our face change – the skin loses elasticity, muscle tone weakens, and fatty tissue migrates. One of the most common areas where these changes are noticed is the lower third of the face, especially in the jaw and neck area. The good news is that there are a number of surgical and non-surgical methods that can significantly reduce these signs of aging and restore the natural and fresh appearance of the face.

Causes of sagging lower face

  • Loss of collagen and elastin

As we age, our bodies naturally reduce the production of collagen and elastin – key proteins responsible for skin’s firmness, elasticity and youthful appearance. Without their support, skin becomes thinner, less resistant to stretching and prone to sagging, especially in gravity-sensitive areas such as the cheeks and jawline.

  • Reduction of fat tissue volume

The midface – especially the cheekbone area – contains fat pads that lose volume and "slide" downward over time. This loss of support in the midface causes the lower third of the face to visibly sag, creating jowls, more pronounced wrinkles around the mouth, and a generally more tired-looking face.

  • Weakening of facial and neck muscles

The muscles of the face and neck also weaken over time, further reducing the support for the skin and tissues. When muscle tone weakens, the face loses definition and the contours of the jaw become duller and less defined. Combined with sagging skin, the result is a drooping jawline and wrinkled skin under the chin.

  • The influence of gravity

Gravity does not choose - it acts on our face every day, and as the skin and supporting tissues lose elasticity, they "resist" its effect more and more difficult. With age, this downward pull becomes visible - especially in the lower third of the face where the changes are most pronounced.

  • External factors

Our daily environment and habits play a big role in the speed of skin aging. UV radiation breaks down collagen, smoking narrows blood vessels and reduces the supply of oxygen to the skin, and chronic stress, poor diet and lack of sleep further worsen skin sagging. All these factors accelerate the loss of tone and elasticity.

  • Genetics

Finally, we must not forget about hereditary factors – some people have a natural predisposition to an earlier loss of facial tone, weaker connective tissue structure or less volume in the cheeks. If members of your family had pronounced jowls or a double chin at an early age, there is a high probability that similar signs will appear in you.

Aesthetic problems with sagging lower face

  • Loss of sharp jawline

One of the most visible changes is the gradual loss of a clear, defined jawline. As the skin and supporting tissues sag, the jawline is no longer straight and clean, but takes on a “wavy” appearance. This effect distorts the facial proportions and gives the impression of a loss of youthful structure.

  • Increased expressiveness of nasolabial and marionette wrinkles

As the volume of the cheeks decreases and the tissue "slides" downward, the lines that run from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial folds), as well as those that run from the corners of the mouth to the chin (marionette lines), become more pronounced. These wrinkles visually pull the face downward, giving it a sad or tired expression.

  • Loose skin on both sides of the chin

As the skin loosens and muscle support is lost, jowls begin to form on both sides of the lower jaw – soft tissue that “hangs” below the jawline. This is one of the most noticeable changes that reveal age and can completely alter the contours of the lower face.

  • Tired facial appearance

Perhaps the most important aesthetic problem is not what others see, but how a person feels. When the face looks tired, droopy, and lackluster, many patients feel that their outward appearance no longer reflects the youthfulness, energy, and vitality they still have on the inside. This discrepancy often becomes the main motive for seeking an aesthetic solution – not out of vanity, but out of a desire to feel better about themselves.

Surgical and non-surgical options for a lower face lift

  • Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are used to restore volume in the midface, improving jawline definition and reducing the appearance of nasolabial and marionette lines. Fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, can be precisely injected into the cheeks, chin, and jawline, restoring a youthful facial contour. This treatment is quick, safe, and has minimal recovery time.

  • Facial wrinkle therapy

Although wrinkle therapy is best known for fighting wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, it can also be very effective for lifting the lower face. Wrinkle therapy is used to relax the muscles that cause the lower face to pull down, preventing the formation of jowls and drooping corners of the mouth. This treatment also helps to tighten the face and soften pronounced lines.

  • Radiofrequency or ultrasound treatments

These innovative treatments use radiofrequency or ultrasound energy to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Radiofrequency penetrates the deeper layers of the skin and improves its firmness and elasticity, while Ultherapy uses ultrasound waves to lift sagging skin. These treatments can significantly improve skin tone, reduce sagging and create a natural lifting effect.

  • Facelift

A mini-lift is a less invasive form of facelift that focuses on the lower face. This surgical procedure involves removing excess skin, tightening and firming the deeper facial tissues, restoring youthful definition to the jawline, cheeks and neck. The results are long-lasting, and recovery usually takes a few weeks. A mini-lift is ideal for those who want a significant change in appearance but do not need a full facelift.

  • Lifting door

Neck lift is a specific surgical procedure used to lift and tighten the skin on the neck and under the chin. This option is excellent for people who have a pronounced "double chin" or hanging skin in the neck area. The procedure may include removing excess fat, tightening the skin and tightening the neck muscles. The results are visible immediately and long-lasting, and patients usually recover quickly.
