Dental bone augmentation

Bone augmentation, also known as bone building, is a surgical procedure that increases the volume and density of bone in the jaw area to allow for the placement of dental implants or to repair bone structure due to disease, injury, or natural bone loss.

Description of the procedure

Regardless of the reason for tooth loss, there is a retreat, or loss of bone, in the jaw. For successful implant placement in the area of the lost tooth, it is important that there is enough bone in that area for the implant to “sink” into, otherwise the implant will not have adequate stability, which can ultimately lead to the implant falling out.

Bone regeneration can be done in several ways:

  1. Dentin grafting – an innovative method in oral surgery where we use our own tooth as a material for bone augmentation. The extracted tooth is cleaned of soft tissue and carious lesions and ground in a grinder. The resulting graft is prepared according to a specified protocol for use and mixed with autologous growth factors obtained using the PRF technique to accelerate healing.
  2. Autologous bone – a method of augmenting the patient’s own bone taken from the donor site and placing it in the place of bone deficiency. This procedure gives excellent results because it is the patient’s own bone and will be used in situations where a larger volume needs to be replaced in the jaw.
  3. Artificial bone – artificially produced materials of synthetic or animal origin, most often in the form of small granules. It is used to correct small and medium bone defects. The body accepts the granules very well and the success of the procedure is maximum.

Candidates

Ideal candidates for bone augmentation are:

  • Patients who do not have enough bone to support dental implants.
  • People with bone loss due to periodontal disease, injury or infection.
  • Patients with naturally thin or underdeveloped bone.
  • Patients who need to have a tooth extracted before implant placement.

Preparation

Bone loss will be diagnosed with X-rays and CT scans, which will also be followed up later by the oral surgeon before the procedure. It is also important to check your current health and provide medical documentation. Sometimes, teeth restorations will be required before the surgery, as well as a thorough cleaning of the tartar.

Procedure progress

The procedure begins with the administration of local anesthesia and begins with an incision to access the bone. After cutting the gum, the area where the bone is missing is augmented. Sometimes a membrane is used to cover the graft to prevent infection and encourage new bone growth. Finally, the area where the procedure was performed is sutured.

Recovery

Recovery from the procedure itself takes several days, and complete healing takes up to several months. Mild to moderate pain and swelling in the first few days are normal, and in this case, painkillers and cold compresses can help. It is recommended to eat soft foods and avoid chewing on the area of the procedure. A check-up is scheduled 7-10 days after the procedure when the stitches are removed and the healing progress is also checked.

Precautions

The most important thing is to follow all instructions to ensure a quick and painless recovery. The oral surgeon will assess whether antibiotics are needed based on the extent of the procedure and prescribe them if necessary.

It is recommended to avoid smoking and physical activity for at least 5 days after the procedure.

Any signs of infection, excessive swelling or pain, bleeding, or fever require immediate consultation with a dentist.

I live in Sweden, and I'm currently on vacation in Croatia. A problem arose yesterday. An awkward meeting of the four on the left above and - crack. I call my former dentist. She's on vacation, but she recommends the Bagatin Polyclinic. Aren't they the ones that the famous and rich go to? I get an appointment for tomorrow morning, but I'm skeptical. They're probably just after crowns and implants. Wrong!!! The doctor who saw me is a very cool dentist. I emphasize, dentist. That means a doctor who puts your needs first. He listened to me and helped me completely in accordance with what I asked of him. Professionally, thoughtfully and carefully. And he even managed to make me laugh. Well done! Thanks to that, I will definitely keep the Bagatin Polyclinic in mind if I decide to have any serious dental procedures in Croatia. Thank you to the Bagatin Polyclinic and Dr. Radić!

Frequently asked questions

What is dental bone augmentation?

Dental bone augmentation is a surgical procedure that replaces lost bone mass in the jaw, in order to create optimal conditions for placing dental implants or preserving the health of remaining teeth.

When is bone augmentation necessary?

The procedure is necessary when:

  • there is insufficient bone volume for implant placement,

  • bone resorption occurred after tooth extraction,

  • there is long-term tooth loss,

  • complex prosthetic rehabilitation is planned.

What does "artificial" bone consist of?

A biocompatible material is used – most often synthetic (alloplast), animal-derived (xenograft), human-donated material (allograft) or the patient’s own bone (autograft). The type is selected individually, depending on the condition and therapeutic goals.

When can an implant be placed after augmentation?

In most cases, the implant can be placed after 4 to 6 months, when the new bone has stabilized and integrated. In some cases, simultaneous augmentation and implant placement is possible, if the condition allows.

Is augmentation a permanent solution?

Yes, if it is performed correctly and the patient maintains good oral hygiene, the augmented bone remains stable and enables long-term successful prosthetic and implant procedures.
