A deviated septum, or deviated nasal septum, is a condition in which the cartilage and bone structure that divides the nasal cavities (septum) is shifted away from the center line. This means that the septum is not straight, but may be curved or shifted to one side. This deviation can cause a variety of symptoms and breathing problems.
Difficulty breathing
People with a deviated septum often have difficulty breathing, especially on the side where the septum is curved. This difficulty may be more pronounced during physical activity or when allergens or irritants are present.
Frequent sinus infections
Deviation can make it difficult to drain mucus from the sinuses, leading to inflammation and frequent sinus infections. People with this condition may have recurring episodes of sinusitis.
Nosebleed
Dry nasal mucosa, which can occur due to difficulty breathing, can result in more frequent nosebleeds.
Facial pain
Due to mucus buildup and inflammation, people may experience pain or pressure in the sinus area, which can result in facial pain or headaches.
Snoring and sleep problems
A deviated septum can cause difficulty breathing during sleep, which can lead to snoring or sleep apnea.
Feeling of pressure or discomfort
Many people with a deviated septum may feel pressure or discomfort in the nasal cavity.
Difficulty breathing through the nose
When the septum is deviated, one nasal cavity can be significantly narrower than the other, making it difficult for air to pass through. This can lead to a feeling of "stuffiness" and difficulty breathing, especially during physical activity.
Sleep disorders
People with a deviated septum often have breathing problems during sleep, which can result in snoring and breathing interruptions (apnea). This can lead to poor sleep quality and feelings of fatigue during the day.
Reduced ability to do physical activity
People with severe septal deviation may notice that they have difficulty breathing during physical activities, which can result in faster fatigue and a decrease in physical activity levels.
Creating changes in breathing patterns
Many people with a deviated septum start breathing through their mouths to compensate for the difficulty breathing through their noses. This can lead to dry mouth, bad breath, and an increased risk of dental problems.
Increased stress and anxiety
Difficulty breathing can cause feelings of anxiety or panic, which further worsens the experience of discomfort. People may become hypersensitive to situations that require breathing effort.
Surgical options
Septoplasty
This is the most common surgical procedure to correct a deviated septum. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision inside the nasal cavity, removes or reshapes the cartilage and bone of the septum to return it to its central position. This surgery is usually performed under local or general anesthesia, and patients often notice an improvement in breathing after recovery.
Rhinoplasty
In some cases, if a patient wants to change the shape of the nose in addition to correcting a deviated septum, rhinoplasty may be considered. This procedure may include septoplasty as part of the procedure.
Non-surgical options
Decongestants
These medications help reduce swelling in the nasal mucosa, making breathing easier. They can be used in the form of tablets or nasal sprays.
Antihistamines
These medications are useful for reducing allergy symptoms that can make breathing more difficult. They help reduce inflammation and mucus production.
Nasal steroids
Steroid nasal sprays help reduce inflammation and swelling of the nasal mucosa, which can improve breathing through the nose.
Using a humidifier:
Keeping the air humidity in the rooms can help reduce the dryness of the nasal mucosa and make breathing easier.
Nose strips
Nasal strips, which are placed on the outside of the nose, can help widen the nasal passages and make breathing easier.
The first days after surgery
Rest is essential, especially during the first few days after surgery. It is recommended to avoid physical exertion and activities that require strain.
Applying cold compresses to the nose can help reduce swelling and pain. The compresses should be applied at intervals of 15-20 minutes.
Painkillers
Your doctor may prescribe painkillers or antibiotics to help relieve pain and discomfort. It is important to take your medications as directed.
Nose care
Patients should avoid any touching or pressing on their nose for the first few weeks.
Your doctor may recommend saline sprays or other medications to keep your nasal mucosa moist, which helps you recover faster.
Swelling and bruising
Swelling around the nose and eyes can be normal after surgery and usually subsides within a few days to a week.
Sleeping with your head elevated can help reduce swelling.
Avoiding certain activities
Patients should avoid strenuous physical activity, such as exercise, lifting heavy objects, or any activity that could put pressure on the nose, for at least a few weeks.
It is also recommended to avoid saunas, hot baths, and other hot environments that can increase swelling.
Monitoring and control examinations
Regular check-ups with your doctor are important to monitor your recovery and ensure that everything is going well. Your doctor will check the condition of your nasal cavity and give you further instructions.
