Acne

Acne is one of the most common dermatological conditions and chronic skin diseases.

In addition to adolescents, as many as 20% of the adult population has acne problems. This is why it is important to seek professional help, especially in severe cases, to prevent permanent damage.

Causes of acne

There are several causes of acne:

  • Excessive sebum production

    Sebaceous glands under the skin produce sebum - a natural oil that moisturizes the skin. When overproduced, it can clog pores.

  • Accumulation of dead skin cells

    These cells can combine with sebum and clog pores, leading to acne.

  • Bacteria

    Bacteria on the skin can multiply inside clogged pores, causing inflammation.

  • Hormones

    Hormonal changes, such as those during puberty or pregnancy, can trigger acne.

  • Genetic predisposition

    We inherit the size of our sebaceous glands and their functional sensitivity to hormonal influences from our immediate family members (father, mother, brother or sister).

The varying causes of acne lead to different symptoms.

Acne symptoms

Acne appears on the face, neck, chest, upper back and hands in the following forms:

  • Blackheads

    are small, flat black spots that occur due to open pores and dirt that collects on the skin;

  • White pimples

    pores are clogged with oily secretions and dead cells;

  • Papules and pustules

    most often appear together. Papules are inflamed hard nodules without visible pus, while pustules contain pus and are most often red and filled with white pus;

  • Nodules

    are larger and firmer papules that spread deeper into the dermis and come in the form of cysts, lipomas, and fibromas. Cysts are purulent nodules;

  • Acne conglobata

    is the most severe form of common acne, and the inflammatory process affects the deeper parts of the follicle and the tissue around the follicle, leading to the formation of hard and painful pus-filled nodules.

In addition to the aforementioned symptoms, acne also brings possible complications.

Complications related to acne

  • Scars

    Acne can leave permanent scars. Most often, these are scars in the form of depressions under the skin, but they can also appear as bumps above the skin. In rare cases, keloids form.

  • Dark spots

    The marks on the skin that may remain after acne heals are caused by pigmentation, also called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

  • Emotional consequences

    Possible anxiety and dissatisfaction with the appearance of the skin. Successful treatment contributes to the self-confidence of every person with acne.

Myths and truths about acne

  • The myth of impure skin

    Acne often stems from internal factors, not just dirt. The idea that acne is caused by poor hygiene is incorrect.

  • The myth about washing your face

    We can even say that excessive cleansing can lead to redness and peeling of the skin.

  • The myth of age

    Acne can affect people of all ages, not just teenagers. Around 70% to 80% of the population suffers from various forms of blemish-prone and acne-prone skin.

  • Nutrition myth

    There is no solid evidence linking specific foods to acne, but the current prevailing view is that excessive consumption of foods with a high glycemic index can worsen acne. There is also a proven correlation with cow's milk consumption.

By understanding this issue, we can better approach its treatment and care.
