Laser teeth whitening

Nice and white teeth are one of the main characteristics of nice looks. To achieve the desired teeth whiteness we recommend laser light whitening, which is today one of the most popular dental procedures. In regards to other methods, laser technology provides faster, safer and gentler approach to teeth whitening and removal of pigment for a beautifully white smile.

About the procedure

Laser teeth whitening provides long-term advantages, and at the same it is the most pleasant procedure of teeth whitening. It enhances the overall sensation of vitality, and you look fresher and nicer. In regards to other procedures, laser whitening is shorter – it lasts only about 20 min, which makes it an ideal treatment to have while on your lunch break. Teeth sensitivity after the treatment is not so prominent, which is why this method is so popular in comparison with other methods. The results are visible immediately, and the teeth are normally 4 to 6 grades lighter.

Why do teeth change color?

The cause of teeth colour change can lie in genetic and degenerative changes, antibiotics, aging, as well as frequent consummation of coloured food, drinks and dietary supplements. Improperly treated teeth can also lead to unwanted teeth colour change, such as after endodontic treatments. Tooth enamel is responsible for the colour of teeth. As the enamel wears off, it becomes thinner, which allows the dentine’s darker colour to surface. To change the tooth colour, it is necessary to change the chemical structure of pigments in the tooth tissue. That is achieved with active oxygen molecules which penetrate the structure of the tooth with the help of hydrogen peroxide, and bind to pigment molecules. This process is also known as oxygenation.

The most modern teeth whitening laser

At our Polyclinic we use the most modern technology - diode laser EPIC™ 10, which represents the latest laser innovation and which is the result of 25 years of engineering at the American company Biolase. Epic is the only diode laser in the USA which comprises three unique work modes (therapies) – soft tissue surgery, whitening and pain reduction, which gives a versatile approach in dental treatment, and therefore the most pleasant treatment for the client. It uses only 10 watts of energy, while the power of micropulses enables a more complete and powerful therapy. The time needed for whitening is considerably shorter in regards to other diode lasers on the market today.

Advantages of laser teeth whitening:

  • Change of colour of 4 - 6 grades
  • Treatment lasts only 20 minutes
  • Appropriate for people with sensitive teeth

Am I a candidate?

Genetic predispositions and habits such as frequents consummation of coffee and black tea, tobacco and other food, can change the color of teeth. Laser whitening is ideal for people with healthy teeth, but who would like to have a nicer smile and raise their quality of life. This type of whitening is particularly appropriate for people with sensitive teeth because during treatment it is possible to control the level of laser light and adjust it to every individual. Teeth whitening is oftentimes a part of extensive oral rehabilitation therapy, especially in aesthetic dentistry.

Teeth whitening should not be done on children under 16 years of age and on pregnant women. In all other age groups it is allowed, often desirable. If you have sensitive teeth it is necessary to tell that to our doctors so that they can adjust the treatment or assess whether you are a good candidate for the treatment.

During the procedure

Before the laser whitening treatment, our doctors will examine your teeth and the supporting tissue, and if necessary, clean the calculus from the teeth surface. First step is the protection of gingiva (gums) with a special preparation. After that we apply hydrogen peroxide to the teeth. Hydrogen peroxide has natural teeth whitening properties. Laser light activates the properties of hydrogen peroxide in order to lighten the pigment in the tooth for a nicer and whiter smile.  The treatment lasts 20 minutes, while the effects of teeth whitening can last up to three years. However, that will differ from person to person due to their life habits.

Recovery time

In some cases, the teeth can become temporarily sensitive to the cold during and after the treatment. Sometimes there can be unpleasantness in the gums, sore throat or white lines on the gums. These symptoms are usually temporary and normally go away within a few days.

If you have sensitive teeth it is necessary to tell that to our doctors so that they can adjust the treatment or assess whether you are a good candidate for the treatment.  The effect will probably last less if you smoke or drink products that darken the teeth (such as coffee, red vine, Coca-Cola, dark juices). For this reason it is necessary to avoid those products at least a week after the treatment.
