Soft layers of dental plaque or biofilm are constantly created in the mouth. If we don’t remove them, they build up and become a threat to the health of our teeth and gums.
A large amount of microorganisms in the mouth is quite common. Moreover, it is necessary for maintaining the balance of bacterial flora of the oral cavity and immune system. Troubles happen when those microorganisms rapidly multiply in warm and moist environment, creating acids which are harmful for the tooth enamel.
What is plaque, and what is dental calculus?
Dental plaque is a colourless layer of bacteria which constantly grow on the surface of teeth. Plaque deposits can retain impurities on the teeth, and at the same time they are the main cause of gum problems. Plaque prevention is based on lifelong proper oral hygiene. The plaque starts forming on the teeth 4 to 12 hours after brushing, which is why it is extremely important to brush the teeth at least twice a day and floss regularly.
Dental calculus is hardened plaque which can retain impurities on the teeth and cause their discolouration. It is strongly attached to the teeth and only dentists can remove it. Dental calculus contains large amounts of bacteria which produce a lot of acid, undermining the structure of enamel, which can lead to caries. Calculus or plaque accumulate more easily in some individuals than in others.
How to get rid of dental calculus?
Unfortunately, we can’t stop the formation of dental calculus, but good oral hygiene, regular visits to the dentist and its regular removal can help us keep its formation under control.
To remove the dental calculus, our dentists recommend teeth cleaning treatments, where the cleaning and sandblasting play the most important role.
Dental calculus removal
Dental calculus removal refers to the removal of all deposits on the teeth: calculus, plaque and pigmentations caused by food and smoking. Even though this is often a treatment, it can also be seen as a prevention method. Once the calculus is formed, it is not possible to remove it using regular oral hygiene methods – only a dental professional can help.
The treatment itself includes the use of different instruments or tools which soften and remove the layers from the teeth. The cleaning is usually done without the need for local anaesthesia and is painless. During the treatment, the areas near the tooth neck can feel oversensitive.
If professional dental hygiene is not performed regularly, the calculus and plaque can lead to serious conditions of the gingiva: gingivitis and periodontitis, and ultimately to teeth loss. Apart from removing the calculus, it is important to subsequently polish the teeth to make their surface smooth and therefore less susceptible to formation of new calculus.

Sandblasting
Sandblasting is one of teeth cleaning techniques. It is done with a dental sandblaster which under pressure ejects tiny micro-abrasive sand grains mixed with water, which successfully removes the built up layers and pigments from the teeth, restoring their natural colour and shine.
Dental sandblasting refers to the removal of yellow and dark stains on the teeth caused by frequent use of cigarettes, coffee, tea and other coloured drinks which in the long run leave stains on the teeth. The procedure is completely painless, and the clients can choose between several sand flavours (chocolate, cherry, menthol etc.). Before the sandblasting, it is necessary to remove the calculus in order to get the best possible results.
Sandblasting isn’t done if there is bleeding, signs of inflamed gingiva, or in case of advanced periodontitis.
