Buttock augmentation

Beautifully shaped buttocks accentuate your proportions and balanced body contour. Implants can correct straight, asymmetrical or hanging butt. Implants can resolve inborn and acquired deformities of the gluteal region. By increasing the buttocks, the body will be more sculptured and harmonious.

About the procedure

Many people with flat or underdeveloped buttocks decide to have bottom augmentation with  implants to improve their physical appearance. The implants are a popular choice for those who want more pronounced change in the look of their buttocks. Increase or buttock augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure that places specially designed silicone implants for the buttocks between the two layers of muscle. Cosmetic surgery to increase the buttocks does not significantly alter the shape of the buttocks, but change size and proportion to the rest of the body.

Am I a candidate?

The best candidates for a butt lift are patients who are in generally good health and maintain a stable weight through a commitment to a healthy diet and lifestyle. It is also important for the patient to have a positive outlook and realistic expectations outcome.

Buttock augmentation can enhance the natural curves for patients who are unhappy with the shape of their rear ends. It can also add volume and roundness to a flat or small butt for patients seeking a more balanced body profile. Body-builders may seek buttock augmentation if they are unable to develop gluteal muscles in proportion with the rest of their bodies. Generally, if you are looking for a fuller, curvier butt, buttock augmentation may be for you.

How do you prepare?

During your consultations, your doctor will gather your complete medical history. You should make him aware of any past procedures that you've had or any past or present medical conditions you have. You should discuss with your surgeon your reasons for wanting surgery and your desired outcome. You will also receive specific instructions for your surgery date, recovery and follow-up.

In order to prepare you for buttock surgery, your doctor will alter or discontinue certain prescription and other medications two weeks prior to surgery. Smoking is discouraged because of the complications it can cause during and after surgery, so you may be asked to stop smoking before surgery if you are a smoker. You will need to avoid consuming alcoholic beverages prior to surgery. You will also need to have lab work completed a couple of weeks before surgery.

You will need to avoid taking aspirin or aspirin products, herbal supplements and garlic before surgery as these can cause more bleeding resulting in excessive bruising.

You must avoid using skin products for two days before surgery. You should not eat or drink anything the night before surgery. You will be permitted to take your prescription medications with water and brush your teeth the morning of surgery. You should wear loose fitting clothing the day of your surgery. Loose sweats are recommended since you will be wearing a compression garment after surgery which can make clothes difficult to put on. Avoid wearing jewelry and do not bring valuables with you the day of surgery.

It is important that during the consultations you remain open and honest, and it is important that you provide detailed information about your health, which includes a list of all medications you are using or have used, as well as vitamins and herbal preparations.

During the procedure

Butt Implants typically involves an incision made between the midline of the buttocks. The plastic surgeon creates a pocket for the silicone implant and inserts it through this incision. The implant is positioned between muscle and fat or within the main buttock  muscle. This area will form scar tissue that should help keep the implant in place. Butt implants come in different sizes and shapes, and can even be customized. In general, these natural-feeling implants help round out the upper and outer parts of the buttocks; but not the lower parts. This procedure is suitable in thin patients who wear size 2-4 dresses where fat grafting is not possible because they do not have any fat to spare.

The implant is either round or oval, the so-called “anatomic” implant. Like breast implants, the implant comes with either a smooth or a textured surface. Neither the shape nor the surface texture of the implant makes much of a difference in the outcome. The content inside the implant can be either solid silicone or cohesive silicone gel, with the solid silicone the most commonly used.

You must be placed face down for the operation. A 5 to 6 cm (about ¼ inch) vertical incision is made in the well-hidden buttock center crease, the sacrum. The dissection continues on either side of the sacrum until the buttock muscle is reached. At this point, the muscle is incised and with careful dissection, a pocket is created for the implant within the muscle. Surprisingly, there is very little bleeding. The implants are inserted into the newly created pockets and the muscle closed over the implants. The midline incision is then closed in layers.

Recovery time

After buttock augmentation with silicone implants, patients should avoid sitting directly on the buttocks or lying on their backs for two to three weeks to maximize results. During this time, compression garments may be worn to reduce swelling. Patients may experience some pain or discomfort, bruising and swelling after the procedure.

You are advised not to sit for a week following the procedure. Most patients can return to work after 2 weeks, provided there is not a lot of extended sitting. Strenuous activity or extended should be avoided until at least 4 to 6 weeks have passed. It is important that your incisions are not subjected to excessive force, abrasion, or motion during this time.

As with all surgery, it is important to understand that these guidelines can vary widely based on the patient’s personal health, the techniques used, and other variable factors surrounding the surgery. Any severe pain should be reported to your doctor.

Precautions

As with any surgery, there are risks to buttock augmentation with silicone implants. These include infection, bleeding, reaction to the anesthesia, and damage to nerves or muscles. One or both buttock implants may shift after they have been placed. Occasionally, a repeat operation is necessary to achieve the desired results. When performed by an experienced surgeon using the proper techniques, buttock augmentation is a highly satisfying and permanent procedure that enhances the profile of the buttocks and surrounding areas for a younger, firmer, curvier look.
